Insights from Niamh Algar

Join Niamh Algar and Lenny Abrahamson on Sunday, 24 May, for a special discussion exploring her career and featuring clips from some of her standout performances.

One of Ireland’s most compelling screen actors, Niamh Algar is renowned for her versatility across film and television. After studying design at DIT and training at Bow Street Academy, she first drew international attention with Without Name, which premiered at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival. Her breakthrough performance in The Virtues led to recognition as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit. Since then, Algar has starred in acclaimed productions including Pure, Raised by Wolves, Malpractice, Playing Nice, and Mary & George alongside Julianne Moore. She now leads the cast of The Iris Affair, continuing an award-winning career defined by bold and distinctive performances.

On Thursday 21st May, Censor starring guest Niamh Algar will screen in Schull. Censor is a tense psychological horror set within Britain’s 1980s “video nasty” panic. Niamh Algar delivers a controlled, unsettling performance as Enid Baines, a film censor whose rigid sense of duty begins to fracture when a disturbing horror movie echoes her sister’s childhood disappearance. Director Prano Bailey-Bond crafts a grainy, period-authentic atmosphere that blurs the line between censorship, guilt, and fantasy. Algar anchors the film’s slow descent into paranoia with quiet intensity. Though deliberately ambiguous, Censor succeeds as both a character study and a haunting meditation on repression and moral panic.
