One of Ireland’s most compelling screen actors, Niamh Algar is renowned for her versatility across film and television. Her breakthrough performance in The Virtues led to recognition as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit. Since then, Algar has starred in acclaimed productions including Pure, Raised by Wolves, Malpractice, Playing Nice, and Mary & George alongside Julianne Moore. On Thursday 21st May, Censor starring guest Niamh Algar will screen in Schull. Censor is a tense psychological horror set within Britain’s 1980s “video nasty” panic. Niamh Algar delivers a controlled, unsettling performance as Enid Baines, a film censor whose rigid sense of duty begins to fracture when a disturbing horror movie echoes her sister’s childhood disappearance. Director Prano Bailey-Bond crafts a grainy, period-authentic atmosphere that blurs the line between censorship, guilt, and fantasy. Algar anchors the film’s slow descent into paranoia with quiet intensity. Though deliberately ambiguous, Censor succeeds as both a character study and a haunting meditation on repression and moral panic.
