Presented by the Amnesty Schull Group, Fire at Sea: Crossing the Mediterranean will screen at this year’s festival on Sat May 23rd

Directed by Gianfranco Rosi and winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film offers a deeply moving portrait of life on the island of Lampedusa, located 200km off Italy’s southern coast. It explores a community that has become both a sanctuary and a graveyard for migrants crossing from Africa and the Middle East.

Following the screening, a discussion examining migration, responsibility, and the human stories behind the headlines, again reflecting on what has or hasn’t changed over the past decade. The panel will feature Stephen Bowen, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland; Iris Wakulenko, Senior Lecturer in Documentary Film at LCC; and will be moderated by Barry Monahan, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at UCC.
